So you want to start therapy...

Good day, my love bugs. I put up an Instagram poll a while back on my wellness page @ acreatorswrite and I asked you guys what is the one thing you want to try or do in 2024. The majority of the response was therapy. As someone who has been in therapy since high school and someone who works in social services, I know that therapy can sound so overwhelming. Let us dismantle some of the myths that are associated with therapy. 1. Every journey starts with acceptance In the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous , the first step is to admit that you have a problem. This is similar to therapy because denial does not take you anywhere with any journey be it a fitness journey or a spiritual journey- you have to admit that there is something you have to address, a truth you are running away from, or an unresolved trauma that you have to deal with in therapy. Acceptance also comes with accountability in therapy you are going to have to own up to everything you ...

You have nothing to prove

Good day, my love bugs. If you live in South Africa you know that Autumn is here which means that my birthday month is also here. Shout out to all of the Aries out there you are truly one of a kind! I become reflective every year around this time looking at all the time that has gone and what is to come. I get severe birthday anxiety, I am a big believer in birthdays and I am extremely excited the whole month of April but after my birthday there is also a sigh of relief. It is me wanting that day to be perfect and sitting in anticipation of the messages, the calls, and who reaches out. I am an adult now well in legal terms I am an adult and have been for some time now but I swear I still feel like a teenager. I do not think I make 'adult' decisions I just live life man. As a last born who spent so many years being the baby of the family, I find it hard to navigate adulthood my biggest fear is that I am going to be a disappointment which I am not and will never be but I struggle...

Live better not faster

Good day, my love bugs. Who here only knows a state of freeze? You live in a state of constant, worry, stress, and anxiety. Well, join the club. I have been struggling with so much stress and anxiety these past few weeks that it has deeply affected my sleep schedule. It has made me reflect on my habits and my thought patterns. I realized that I am always looking at what needs to be done next or what goal still needs to be achieved while I haven't stayed in what I already have and am grateful about it. It made me think, that we are always moving especially at a rush pace. Where are well rushing to? The meaning of slow living Slow living is a mindset that encourages us to live in a self-aware and more conscious state of being where we make purposeful decisions for the benefit of our well-being. This mindset disregards the notion that being busy equates to being successful or important. Slow living is a part of the wider slow movement which began in the 1980s in Italy. It began as a m...

Be Intentional with your rest

Good day, my love bugs. I do not think resting is spoken about enough emphasis is always put on work and being productive. I do not undermine the value of hard work and the importance of being productive. Although this may be true there is more to life than endless schedules being overwhelming and being fatigued. Toxic hustle culture: An outcome of capitalism You may be familiar with the term hustle culture a lot of self-help content is based on hustle culture. The belief is that a person has to have multiple side hustles and that resting is the reward. Well, your rest is not a reward, it is essential to your health. Toxic hustle culture often arises within the capitalist system due to the emphasis on relentless productivity, constant growth, and individual success. The competitive nature of individuals of capitalism creates a mindset where people feel compelled to work all the time and abandon personal well-being to achieve financial success. This pressure is unhealthy as it can res...

For your vision board in 2024

Good day, my love bugs. The beginning of the year is usually a season of reflecting and planning for the next coming months. In last year's post, I emphasized that your vision board is yours, it is also subject to change at any time. You can plan your vision board however you want to. Here are some tips that you can implement in the goals that you have set up this year. Your intent is important. When listing the things you want to achieve this year, your intent is important. Write out why next to each goal. This is going to help you choose the goals that are most fitting to you and not the goals that society says we should have. This will also help you in narrowing your focus instead of having 20 vague goals, for example, being in the best shape you would rather start with getting that gym membership or looking at beginner at-home workouts. The 'why' is also what will keep you motivated in times when things do not go that well, when you feel like giving up, or when you are...

Unlearning the complexity of shame

Good day, my love bugs. We must not be afraid to talk about our experiences however we also need to set ourselves free from the shame that comes with it. I have always been a 'smart' kid and I lived by academic validation. It was what pleased my family, and teachers and it became what I was known for. Fast forward to me being in university and failing a module in my first year. What a humbling experience that was it took a blow to my self-esteem and for the first time in my life my family saw me as human. They were not pleased with my failing but what that experience did for me was to show them that I too struggle and I am not perfect. Life does not always go as planned and at times we make mistakes. You can grow from mistakes and move past them but what if everyone is still seeing you as your mistake? Well, in the great words of Gugulethu Nyatsumba a YouTuber and host of the podcast After School Is After School “If someone is wanting to keep you at a certain pla...

Navigating self-forgiveness

Good day, my love bugs. Happy New Year! I spoke to a friend the other day and she told me that you cannot hate yourself into becoming the person that you want to be. This made me think about how we are not moving forward because we are still caught up in the mistakes that we made.  According to Verywellmind  self-forgiveness is not necessarily about letting yourself off the hook it is also not a sign of weakness. It is an important step that you are taking for your mental health. Self-forgiveness means that you are accepting what has happened and you are willing to move past it without ruminating over past events that cannot be changed. There can be many reasons why you are struggling to forgive yourself it could be that you are worried that you are going to make the same mistake again or you are worried about how facing your actions might damage your self-esteem.  Depending on the magnitude of the mistake(s) and who it has impacted forgiving yourself might not seem like ...
